Press Release
MadeIn Gallery is honoured to present Wang Jianwei’s solo project “Disappearance of the Surface I” on September 12, 2024. Taking the exhibition as an object, it allows the coexistence of works of different times, perspectives, and media in the same ecosystem, attempting at a new hybridity of time and reality.
Wang Jianwei sees an artist’s work as an ecosystem in itself. As posed in Circulation – Sowing and Harvesting (1994), the question is how to build an environment for the production of things. Such an environment is not a reorganization of relationships to produce another “new” form, but an attempt to locate a “landing point” in the crevice between their original position and the current environment.
Disappearance of the surface implies a flatness of time, or an emergence of deep time.
For, if each work is a unique object and encounters each other in different time and space, what effect can they produce in the new environment? Can they stimulate new potential? All this is beyond our speculation. The flatness between them and us dictates that they remain functioning in our absence. This is also what the project intends.
